The texel flock on Farre Hede was
established in 1973. In 1980 the whole flock was
replaced because of maedi infection. The new animals
were bought from Marion Asmussen. Since then the
flock has participated in many breeding arrangements
such as performance testing, data recording, A.I.
etc., and a few times we have been at shows. Today
there are 12 breeding ewes.
Apart from the common breeding
targets for the breed, we have aimed for a line that
keeps the good muscles and little fat at the same
time as the growth rate slowly increases. It is our
- and others as well - experience that a high growth
rate often give lambs with too much fat. It is
stated, that texel lambs can not be to fat even with
a slaugter weight of 25-30 kg. If you happen to see
the slaughter lambs on the hook, you will see, that
very fast growing lambs very well can have an
undesired layer of fat.
The flock is free of maedi. It has been tested for scrapie
since 1996 and is therefore ready for export.
Over the years we have been
exporting to USA, New Zealand, Yogoslavia, Sweden,
England, Scotland, Finland and Norway.
