Lysnetgaard is a part time farm
situated 15 km south of Randers. Our fields are all
next to Lysnet, which at a level of 131 meters is
one of the highest points in Denmark. The name
Lysnet is incorporated in the named animals from the
farm. On the farm there
is a breeding flock of texel sheep and a breeding
herd og piemontese cattle.
When the original flock of
texels, established i 1963, in the late seventies
failed the maedi test, a new flock was established
in 1979 with four ewes bought from two of the then
leading texel breeders. Since then no female stock
of any other blood lines have been bought in. Today
the flock consists of approximately 25 breeding ewes
and rams.
Since 1979 the flock has been
tested for maedi and since 1996 for scrapie. Animals
sold for export have passed all the relevant disease
checks. The hight health status of the flock is now
supervised by Svend Bek-Pedersen's biannual visits.
Throug the last years the
genotypes of the individual animals have been mapped,
and most of them are today genotype 1 (ARR/ARR)
Our main breeding targets of
the flock are to get animals with:
- big muscles and well
placed legs
- no hereditary defects
- good maternal instincts
and high fertility
- capacity to utilize home
grown food through natural upbringing
- good charisma, although
this does not necessarily have any economic
significance
The flock has - apart from the
last few years - through many years been present at
the National Show in Herning and has won many
prizes.
